British holidaymakers who are heading on a trip to the continent this year have been urged to acquire a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

The card is available without charge and entitles holders to receive state healthcare at a reduced cost or sometimes for free.

Having replaced the E111 in 2006, it also covers treatments to allow holders to stay in the country where they are until their return date. People who still have E111 forms should apply immediately for the EHIC to maintain the level of cover provided by the scheme.

The EHIC is available to pick up for free from the NHS website, and Simon Calder, a travel expert and writer, has warned people to avoid sites that charge a fee for the card.

With regards to travel insurance, Mr Calder said: “Always make sure the travel insurance you are buying is suitable for your needs.

“I, for instance, just buy mine to cover medical emergencies so I have a fairly cheap no-frills policy.”

He also stressed that if customers are taking part in any unusual activities on their travels then they should inform their provider, as well as letting them know of anyone in their party who has a pre-existing medical condition.
